undreds of distribution staff at the Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta went on strike on Monday to protest the alleged monopoly of state-owned port operator PT Pelindo II.
Indonesian Logistic and Forwarder Association (ALFI) chairman Iskandar Zulkarnain said, as quoted by tempo.co, Pelindo II had monopolized all businesses at the port from the downstream level to the upstream. Around 785 companies at the port have been forced to cease operations.
The ALFI ordered 200 of their members to go on strike and 585 others from the transportation service business to stop operation too.
Pelindo II spokesman Sofyan Gumelar said that it had not intended to monopolize businesses at the port and that mediation had taken place between the private companies and the port operator.
